What Is Executive Functioning Coaching

Knowing what you need to do does not always make it possible to do it.

You may understand the importance of a task, genuinely want to complete it, and still find yourself unable to begin. You may create detailed systems that work briefly and then fall apart. Everyday responsibilities may require so much effort that there is little energy left for the things that matter to you.

Executive functioning coaching offers practical, collaborative support for turning intentions into actions in ways that are realistic and sustainable. It is a service designed to help you find new ways to work with your executive functioning differences.

What Are Executive Functions?

Executive functions are the mental processes involved in directing attention and behaviour toward a goal. They include:

  • Starting tasks

  • Planning, organizing and prioritizing

  • Managing time

  • Remembering what needs to be done

  • Shifting between activities

  • Regulating attention and effort

  • Monitoring progress

  • Completing and following up on tasks

Executive functioning differences are commonly associated with ADHD and autism, but many people experience them during periods of stress, burnout, illness, trauma, or major life change. Differences in the way a person’s executive functions work can lead to significant challenges in their work, academic and home life.

Session Length: Generally, initial sessions last 50-60 minutes. As you integrate the tools and habits discussed in session, you may feel able to move toward shorter sessions (e.g. 25 or 30 minutes).

Frequency: The recommended session frequency is once per week in the beginning. Some people prefer to move to less frequent sessions as they move closer to their goals and enter a maintenance phase.

What Coaching Can Help With

Coaching may focus on areas such as:

  • Creating routines that are flexible enough to maintain

  • Beginning tasks that feel overwhelming or unrewarding

  • Managing appointments, deadlines, and administrative work

  • Organizing physical or digital spaces

  • Planning projects and breaking them into smaller steps

  • Developing strategies for transitions and task switching

  • Reducing reliance on memory

  • Balancing competing responsibilities

  • Recognizing unrealistic expectations

The goal is not to create a perfectly optimized life. It is to reduce unnecessary friction and develop supports that reflect how you actually function. Ultimately, the goal is to help you find ways to work with your unique brain rather than against it.

How Is Coaching Different From Therapy?

Coaching is generally more practical, present focused, and action oriented than psychotherapy.

Sessions often centre on a specific difficulty, goal, routine, or project. You and your coach may develop a plan, test strategies, review what happened, and make adjustments.

Therapy may be more appropriate when the primary concern involves trauma, significant emotional distress, mental health symptoms, relationship patterns, or a desire for deeper psychological exploration.

There can be overlap between the two services. During an initial consultation, we can help you consider which type of support best matches what you are seeking. In some circumstances, a person may participate in both therapy and coaching with separate providers and clearly defined goals.
